Search Troubleshooting
The search does not seem to search the contents of attachments
Problem: MailStore Server was just installed and contents of file attachments are note searched
Solutions: Indexing the contents of file attachments slows down the archiving process and increases the size of the search indexes significantly. Because of this, the contents of file attachments are not indexed in the standard configuration. How to enable indexing of file attachments is described in the manual chapter Search_Indexes.
Although indexing of file attachments is configured, noting is returned as search result
Problem: Everything was set up correctly, but still text within archived file attachments cannot be found. What could be the reason?
Solution: First, this may be because, due to performance and stability, MailStore Server only indexes the first 10,000 Words (not characters!) of file attachments. In most cases, keywords are contained within the first 10,000 Words. If an email has multiple file attachments, at most 10,000 words are indexed overall. Of course, the file attachments themselves are archived in their entirety and can be searched in full with the appropriate application.
Another reason could be that MailStore Server was unable to read the corresponding file because no IFilter driver was available or because the file was DRM protected (copy protection), for example.
Although indexing of file attachments is configured, noting is returned as search result when searching for text in emails that have been forwarded as attachement if MailStore Server is running on a 64bit operating sysetm
Problem: Everything was set up correctly, but still text within archived email file attachments cannot be found if MailStore was installed on a 64bit operating system. What could be the reason?
Solution: A problem with a iFilter driver exists. A possible solution is described under http://support.microsoft.com/kb/969165
In the Status column, OK (Compatibility mode) is displayed
Problem: In the Status column, OK (Compatibility mode) is displayed. What should be done?
Solution: The search index was created with an older version of MailStore Server and has an internal structure different from indexes which were built using the current version. No action is required. However, these indexes can be upgraded by rebuilding them. This significantly increases indexing and search performance.
The search for a specific email domain does not return any results
Problem: Searching MailStore Client or MailStore Web Access for mydomain.com or @mydomain.com does not return any results although emails have been received from that domain.
Solution: The MailStore search only returns results when searching for complete words. Because an email domain is considered to be a partial word, placeholders such as the asterisk symbol have to be used. MailStore's search engine uses such placeholders to search for specific substrings. For example, @mydomain.com can be used to retrieve all emails of a domain without having to filter a specific top level domain.
In the example above, searching for *mydomain.com or *@mydomain.com will return the expected results.
Additional information about the MailStore serach is available in the MailStore manual.
